1 Corinthians 11:26
For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
Jesus didn't ask for a monument or a statue. He didn't demand His image to be sculpted into Mount Rushmore. And He didn't insist upon a national holiday or a special song. He simply asked that a meal be enjoyed.
When Jesus saw Zacchaeus in a tree, He said to him: "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." (Luke 19:5)
Following His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples on the Sea of Galilee and said to them: "Come and have breakfast." (John 21:12)
His critics said of Him: "Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners." (Matthew 11:19)
It seems to me that Jesus liked to eat (a particular pastime I enjoy as well). Yet, there is so much more to sharing a meal with Him (and in honor of Him), than simple pleasure. The Lord said in Isaiah 55:2: "Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare." The Lord uses the symbolism of food to describe the richness of the coming Kingdom. It's not surprising He would say: "To remember Me -- share a meal -- eat, drink, and enjoy!"
In our passage today, Paul tells us whenever we eat and drink in His honor, we "proclaim the Lord's death until He comes." When was the last time you shared a meal with other brothers and sisters in Christ? Was the Lord present?
