1 Corinthians 13
Introduction to Chapter 13
Chapter Thirteen is called the "Love Chapter" of the Bible. Although the chapter is all about "love", there is no single definition. Before we begin, it is important to understand that there are three different Greek words which are all translated into our one English word "love". There is "eros" which describes passion or lust (we might also use the term "sex"); "phileo" which means fondness towards humanity in general or another human being (it is where we get our word "philanthropist"); and the word Paul uses in Chapter Thirteen to describe a different kind of love: "agape".
"Agape" is the highest word for love in the New Testament and means "divine love". It is much more than any type of emotional love. It is love by choice. It is the very definition of God because the Bible tells us that God is love.
As we move forward, Paul will give us more insight. Trying to define "love" with words is like trying to learn what it's like to surf from reading a book, or truly appreciate the beauty and artistry of an English Garden from a written description. The closest we can come is by drawing contrasts and comparisons to other things. This is the approach Paul takes in Chapter Thirteen.
Is it more meaningful to tell someone you love them or show them? I think the answer is both. In Chapter Thirteen, Paul will tell us what love is, and then he will show us how our actions can demonstrate God's love. Will you follow his example?
