“We Are the Ones Who Are Off and On”

Thoughts for Today:

Whenever we look at Scripture, it is always important to look at the framework, perspective, and circumstances that are reflected. As we apply this principle to our passage today, we realize Paul is continuing to describe praying, and now singing, with his spirit. It's another form of speaking in tongues. Notice also the use of the lower case "s" in the word "spirit". It identifies our human spirit, rather than the Holy Spirit.

There have been four times in verse 15 that Paul has said, "I will." ("I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind...I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.") Therefore, once we have received the gift of speaking in tongues -- it then becomes a function of our will.

Unfortunately, some people think we still don't have control over this gift. Why? Because the Holy Spirit can't be turned off and on like a light switch. While that is true, it's not the correct point of view. It's not the Holy Spirit who is turned off and on. He is always on. We are the ones who are off and on. Therefore, anytime we turn ourselves on (a function of our will when we choose to seek Him), the Holy Spirit will respond and give us His Spiritual language with which to communicate.

Questions to Ponder:

Sometimes, when I am troubled and confused, the Lord gives me a song to sing. It always lifts my spirit, recharges my faith, and gives me peace. It is just one more way the Lord uses His spiritual language to communicate with Him. Are you having difficulty verbalizing your concerns in prayer? What song is on your heart? Will you sing? He is always "on". Will you join Him in fellowship?
