1 Corinthians 16:10-11
If Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with you, for he is carrying on the work of the Lord, just as I am. No one, then, should refuse to accept him. Send him on his way in peace so that he may return to me. I am expecting him along with the brothers.
In 1 Timothy 4:12, Paul instructed his protege: "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." So other than his age, what other reasons would Paul have to tell the Corinthians to not despise Timothy? Because he was also weak physically and emotionally. (1 Timothy 5:23: "Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses." and 2 Timothy 1:7: "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.")
Regardless of these limitations, Paul saw inside of Timothy a heart for the Kingdom (1 Timothy 1:6): "For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands." Paul regularly encouraged Timothy to not allow his emotional nor physical restrictions to be a constraint. So what was the end result? Timothy ultimately lived up to all the potential Paul saw in him and went on to become one of the giants in Church history.
Have you been investing in your younger brothers and sisters in Christ? I am always amazed at how God's church transitions from one generation to the next. Who do you see as future leaders in your church? Are you an encouragement? Do you look beyond physical appearance to the heart?
