“Overflowing with Comfort”

2 Corinthians 1:5b

...so also through Christ our comfort overflows

Thoughts for Today:

The Apostle Paul suffered quite a lot of hardship and persecution to follow Jesus. But he also found a great deal of comfort in our Lord. And so will we, if we learn to rely on Him completely when we go through our own difficult times, tragic storms, and seemingly impossible challenges. To gain a better understanding of the Lord's "comfort" let's take at what Paul means when he says it "overflows". The Greek word PERISSEUO (translated "overflows"), occurs 41 times in the New Testament. However, it is also translated: "surpasses, lavished, left over, abound, abundance, remained, exceed, etc." The following are a few examples:

Matthew 5:20: "For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses [overflow] that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."

Luke 9:17: "They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over [overflow]."

Romans 5:15: "But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!"

Ephesians 1:8: "...that he lavished [overflow] on us with all wisdom and understanding."

Philippians 1:9: "And this is my prayer: that your love may abound [overflow] more and more in knowledge and depth of insight."

What Paul is saying is that Christ's comfort, strength, help, and love are ready to overflow into any and every trial we might face. How? When we look to Him. (Hebrews 12:1b-2a: "And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.")

Questions to Ponder:

Are you in need of comfort? Have you looked to Jesus? All too often we look for comfort from people, or in food, alcohol, or drugs. But those will never provide lasting satisfaction. Will you seek Jesus today?
