“"Righteousness and Glory for Eternity"”

2 Corinthians 3:9-11

If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

Thoughts for Today:

Jesus said in John 3:17, "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." Paul wrote in Romans 8:1, " Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Clearly, these verses tell us that condemnation is not what God intends for His children. Yet, in our passage today, Paul tells us the Old Testament Law brought condemnation. This seeming contradiction can be confusing.

In Galatians 3:21, Paul addresses this issue: "Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law." In other words, the Lord uses the Law to convict lost people of their sin. Yet, there is something more: The Law doesn't contradict the promise, it simply provides an alternative. It gives humanity a choice. We can either receive the gift of a righteous standing before God through Christ, or try and earn one on our own. How? By keeping every single point of God's perfect Law. Think about it. If any legal system could bring a person to salvation, it would be the Ten Commandments. Why? Because the Law is perfect. The only problem is no one can keep it.

This is the point Paul makes in our passage today; the Law is glorious and perfect, but just like the glow on Moses' face, we can only conform to its tenets temporarily. We are destined to fail. Why? Because it is perfect and we are not. Somewhere along the line, a mistake will be made -- and when we do -- the Law will be there to condemn. It's why we need Jesus. His righteousness and glory last for eternity!

Questions to Ponder:

Are you still trying, in your own strength and will, to keep the Law? Do you know people who think because they are a good person and follow the laws of society, somehow they will earn salvation? Nothing could be farther from the truth. (Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.") Share the Gospel of Jesus!
