2 Corinthians 3:17:18
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
To the church in Rome, Paul wrote (Romans 8:2): "Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death." It is the same theme he speaks of in our passage today: The Spirit of the Lord brings with Him freedom and the tools to live a victorious life. For example:
Romans 8:15: "The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship."
Romans 8:6: "The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."
2 Timothy 1:7: "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
Romans 7:6: "But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code."
We know from experience that our own will is no match against Satan, sin, or the flesh. However, we can be just as certain that Satan, sin, and the flesh are no competition for the Spirit of the Lord who resides in us. (1 Corinthians 6:19: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?") The New Covenant is a work of life and Spirit -- the life of Jesus was given to defeat our enemy. It's the point Paul makes in our passage today: Wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (Galatians 5:1: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.")
In 2 Timothy 2:26, Paul wrote: "And that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will." Are you still living in bondage? From what do you need to be set free? The Spirit of God is freedom. His love has set us free. (1 John 4:18: "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.") Will you trust in the Lord's promises? Will you allow His Spirit to set you free?
