“"Being Just Fine With Old Age"”

2 Corinthians 5:1

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

Thoughts for Today:

President John Quincy Adams once said, “So great is my veneration for the Bible that the earlier my children begin to read it the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of society. I have for many years made it a practice to read through the Bible once every year.” So it should be no surprise, when later in life, someone asked how he felt now that he had grown advanced in years. He answered, "I feel fine. This old house that I live in is really getting feeble. The shingles are coming off the top and the foundations seems to be coming out from underneath, but Mr. Adams is just fine, thank you."

What did President Adams mean? He addresses the same subject as Paul in our passage today. Our earthly dwelling is temporary and every time we look in the mirror we are reminded of the fact we are rushing our way to eternity. Paul understood his body was temporary -- he called it a "tent". President Adams described it as an "old house". Both looked forward to their eternal bodies which God has prepared for all believers.

Questions to Ponder:

Age catches up to us all. It doesn't matter whether we are a two-term former President of the United States like John Quincy Adams, or have the spiritual credentials of the Apostle Paul. All of us will one day die. Are you ready? Are you "just fine" with getting older? Do you look eagerly forward to your eternal house in heaven, or are you still desperately clinging to this temporary world?
