2 Corinthians 5:11
Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.
In our passage today, Paul explains that the fear of the Lord is his motivation in ministry. Was he saying that he feared God would hurt him if he didn’t preach? Of course not, rather his point is the Gospel is Good News to those who receive it, and should be real terror to those who reject it.
I read the story once of a little boy who while sitting in church listened to a pastor preach on the result of un-repented sin and the judgment of the Lord. The pastor asked for a show of hands for all those in the audience who were saved. The little boy immediately raised his hand. Later, the pastor took the boy aside and asked him why he raised his hand. The boy answered, “I knew what came next if I didn’t.”
In the same way, Paul knew what came next. He had been given a glimpse of life after death and it instilled in him a fear that was so overwhelming that he just had to share it at every opportunity. It’s why he was committed to sharing the Gospel and spoke so directly and persuasively. Paul knew the truth. (Acts 13:47: “For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”)
Often times, when I find myself reluctant to share the Gospel, I am reminded of the consequence to the person if I don’t. They will perish. How will people know the truth if we don’t tell them? Who will you share the Good News of Salvation with today?
